Functional Mushrooms for Our Fur Babies

During one of our bi-monthly free group coaching calls, someone asked me about functional mushrooms for their dog. Between you and me, I had never considered it until that moment.

Then, before I even had time to dig into it, a friend told me her cats were sipping on functional mushroom tea. Yes, the same one she uses as a coffee replacement.

So of course, I had to look into it. Turns out, a lot of people are exploring functional mushrooms not just for themselves, but also for their pets.

Now, just to be clear, we are not making health claims here. But what I can say is that some pet owners are exploring certain non-psychoactive mushrooms as part of their animals’ routine. The interest is real, and the curiosity is growing.

Here’s a little breakdown of what I came across.

Mushies For Our Besties

Turkey Tail
Known for its polysaccharide content, Turkey Tail is a favorite in the world of functional mushrooms. It is often included in blends made for both people and pets.

Reishi
Reishi mushrooms are traditionally used to support the immune system and maintain vitality and overall well-being.*

Lion’s Mane
Lion’s Mane has become a staple in many functional mushroom stacks. Some pet owners include it in their routine, especially when caring for older animals.

Cordyceps
Cordyceps is a go-to mushroom for those looking to support active lifestyles. It is sometimes used by pet owners during periods of recovery or rest.

Chaga and Maitake
Both of these, and especially Chaga, are commonly found in general wellness formulas. They are appreciated by people seeking a broad-spectrum mushroom mix for their animals.

Shiitake
A well-loved mushroom in many food traditions. Shiitake also makes its way into pet-friendly blends focused on overall mushroom variety.

Finding the Right Approach

If you’re thinking about functional mushrooms for your pet, focus on clean, high-quality extracts. Dually extracted products are often recommended by those deep in the mushroom world.

Unlike the way we might experiment with microdosing as humans, supplementing animals calls for a more cautious approach. Start simple and always check in with a vet who is open to holistic options.

And to be extra clear, we’re talking about non-psychoactive mushrooms only. Psilocybin is not safe for pets.

What I can recommend is this: get curious, speak with your vet, and explore what feels aligned for you and your animal companion.
