At our farm in Flevoland, the Netherlands, we control every stage of mushroom production, from cultivating and harvesting to the precise extraction methods we’ve developed over years of scientific research. This vertical integration is rare in the industry, and it allows us to produce functional mushroom extracts of unmatched quality, with consistent potency and purity.
The Growing Process: Optimal Conditions for Each Species
Our growing process starts in a controlled environment specifically designed to optimise each phase of mushroom development.
After inoculating the substrates with mushroom spawn, we place the bags in an incubation room where temperature, humidity, and air composition are carefully monitored.
Different species require unique conditions, and our facilities are capable of adjusting these parameters to suit each mushroom type. For instance, Lion’s Mane may need longer incubation compared to faster-growing varieties like Cordyceps.
During incubation, the mycelium (the fungal “root” network) spreads throughout the substrate, breaking down complex compounds in the wood and grain to extract nutrients.
This process, called solid-state fermentation, is a slow, natural method that allows the mushrooms to grow in a way that mimics their wild environment.
By controlling variables such as temperature, airflow, and light exposure, we guide the mushrooms to produce the highest concentration of beneficial compounds.
After incubation, we initiate the fruiting cycle by shifting the environment to mimic natural conditions that trigger mushroom fruiting.
This includes lowering the temperature, increasing humidity, and controlling the CO₂ levels. These adjustments signal to the mushrooms that it’s time to reproduce, resulting in the formation of the fruiting bodies—the part of the mushroom harvested for its medicinal properties.
Light is also essential in this phase, as mushrooms require exposure to certain wavelengths to complete the fruiting process and generate compounds like Vitamin D2, which naturally forms when mushrooms are exposed to UV light.
Precision Extraction for Maximum Potency
Once harvested, the mushrooms undergo a carefully developed extraction process to ensure that the final product is both potent and bioavailable.
Most producers rely on high-temperature extraction methods, which are faster and far more economical but can degrade sensitive compounds.
At our farm, we use a multi-stage, low-heat extraction process that we’ve developed specifically for medicinal mushrooms. This process allows us to extract a full spectrum of bioactive compounds without compromising their efficacy.
Mushrooms have tough cell walls made of chitin, a compound that’s difficult for the human body to break down.
To overcome this, we employ a gradual extraction technique over three to four weeks, which involves breaking down these cell walls and releasing valuable compounds in a bioavailable form.
Our extraction uses a combination of gentle heat, natural solvents, and controlled agitation, preserving heat-sensitive compounds such as triterpenoids and polysaccharides. Unlike the rapid, high-heat extraction common in the industry, our method prioritizes quality over speed, ensuring that the final product contains the full medicinal profile of the mushroom.
For each species, we tailor our extraction process to target specific compounds that enhance their respective benefits.
For example, with Reishi, we aim to optimise triterpenoid and polysaccharide levels, while Lion’s Mane extracts are focused on promoting neurogenic compounds.
Our approach is both scientific and artisanal, combining years of Eastern mycological knowledge with Western modern extraction technology.
Why is our Lion’s Mane the Best in the Market?
You may often see other brands mentioning terms like “single extraction,” “dual extraction,” and even more specialised methods.
But what do these terms really mean, and what sets them apart?
At our farm, we use a precision dual extraction method involving water and alcohol to capture the full spectrum of bioactive compounds from our Lion’s Mane.
This combination is particularly important for functional mushrooms like Lion’s Mane, where different compounds require distinct extraction processes to unlock their benefits.
Water extraction is ideal for drawing out polysaccharides, including beta-glucans, which are known for their immune-modulating effects and are currently being researched for their potential to enhance neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections.
This research has exciting implications for cognitive health and adaptability, as improved neuroplasticity may support memory, learning, and overall mental resilience.
On the other hand, alcohol extraction is effective at isolating terpenes and other smaller, non-water-soluble compounds that are increasingly recognised for their health benefits.
For Lion’s Mane, terpenes are believed to influence gut health, which in turn has an impact on mood and mental well-being. Emerging research suggests that terpenes may play a role in supporting the digestive canal, fostering a balanced microbiome that could lead to improved mood regulation via the gut-brain axis.
By combining these two extraction methods, we ensure that our Lion’s Mane and other mushroom extracts contain both beta-glucans and terpenes, maximizing their full therapeutic potential.
This dual extraction, along with our precision extraction techniques, allows us to produce an extract that is rich in bioavailable compounds and unmatched in quality.
Our method captures the complete medicinal profile of each mushroom, providing a holistic wellness solution that leverages the latest insights in mycology and neuroscience.
The Advantage of Vertical Integration
In the global mushroom industry, it’s common for each stage of production—growing, drying, extraction—to be outsourced to different suppliers, often in different countries.
This disjointed approach can result in quality loss, especially if the mushrooms are stored for long periods or exposed to extreme conditions. By maintaining full control over the entire process, we ensure that every batch meets our stringent standards from start to finish.
Unlike mass-produced extracts that may contain fillers or lose potency over time, our extracts are freshly prepared on-site, using mushrooms grown and processed at our farm.
This vertical integration enables us to produce highly concentrated extracts that retain their full medicinal properties, setting a new standard in the industry.
Through our comprehensive approach to cultivation and extraction, we don’t just produce mushroom supplements; we create potent, pure, and sustainable wellness solutions rooted in scientific rigour and environmental responsibility.
