When reading some online comments, I’ve seen users comments that supplementation is not necessary, if we eat properly.
Although this appears to be a good argument, and one that I would like to be true, in our modern world, it’s just not.
It’s not true for several reasons. The first reason is that our food is not as nutritiously dense as it was decades ago. The second reason is that we live longer than ever and need all the help we can get.
There’s a wonderful podcast series called The 200-Year-Old. I remember listening to it when it was first released in 2018 and it still captivates my imagination today.
The podcast is future-facing, purely fictional, and based on current science and future forecasts.
This audio series really changed everything about the way I see life, relationships, careers, and of course, health.
Lifespan and Our Nutritional Needs
The evolution of medical science has catapulted into the age of technology.
We are living longer than ever! Living longer also means living well during all our future years.
Aside from the mostly depleted soils in which our food is grown, our nutritional needs change during every decade of our lives.
For example, nutrient absorption changes with age.
We need different things at different times, and supplementation is key to ensuring we get those needed nutrients.
Nutrient Deficiencies and Aging
As we get older, our bodies might not absorb nutrients from food as efficiently.
Factors like environmental toxins, lifestyle habits, and hormonal changes, can lead to nutrient deficiencies.
These deficiencies can affect our overall health and speed up the ageing process.
By supplementing with key vitamins and minerals, we allow our bodies to do what they know how to do best, be healthy.
Being healthy includes enjoying a robust immune system, operating with a sharp mind, moving with strong bones, and a robust cardiovascular system.
Antioxidants and Longevity
Adding to the long list of benefits supplements provide, the extra antioxidants they provide are a key point.
Antioxidants are essential in fighting oxidative stress, which is a big player in ageing and related diseases.
By adding antioxidant-rich supplements like vitamin C, vitamin E, and coenzyme Q10 to our daily routine, we can protect our cells, and reduce inflammation.
Stanford Lifestyle Medicine lists these as vital supplements:
- Creatine – for strong muscles and cognitive performance.
- Vitamin D – To promote muscle and bone strength.
- Magnesium – To promote restful sleep.
- B12 and B9 (folate) – To promote brain health.
The Future is Personalized Supplementation
Personalised healthcare is becoming more popular because there is no one-size-fits-all.
One thing doesn’t work for everyone.
Personalise nutrition looks at each individual’s needs, genetics, and lifestyle and will inform the customized and personalized supplementation protocol.
A panel of tests are performed to determine a baseline, notice what is out of range to then create the cocktail of supplements and lifestyle habits that will make 200 years of life feel like a dream.
Preventative Supplementation
There is no need to wait for ill health to start supplementing.
Preventative and supportive supplementation will not only help us forget our advanced years but will also provide us with the experience that ageing can be easy.
By tackling nutrient deficiencies, supporting essential bodily functions, and adding antioxidants to our diet, we can improve our health, cognition and well-being as we age.
As we continue to live longer, the role of supplementation in maintaining our health is basically non-negotiable.
Whether you are microdosing for improved focus or supplementing with functional mushrooms for overall well-being, supplements are now must-haves rather than nice-to-have.
Top Up
You might not be surprised to learn that functional mushrooms are excellent supplements.
A good functional mushroom extract is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, a case in point is our Mushroom Essentials Complex (MEC).
MEC is a balanced blend of Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Reishi, and Cordyceps. Like the four legs of a table, these four mushrooms are a solid foundation for overall well-being.
