About this article Human Pro sells the products mentioned in this article, so this is not an independent review. Our editorial policy explains how we work.

Mushroom powder and mushroom extract capsules last until the best-before date printed on the pack, as long as you store them as the label says. For Human Pro capsules that means a cool, dry and dark place at room temperature (15 to 25 °C), with the pack tightly closed. The date sits on the back of the pack, next to the LOT number.

Each question below gets its own short answer. We use our Lion's Mane capsules as the worked example, with values from a published batch certificate.

Key facts

  • EU food law defines the best-before date as the date until which a food keeps its specific properties when properly stored (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011).
  • Our mushroom capsule labels say to keep the pack tightly closed in a dark, dry place at 15 to 25 °C.
  • Lion's Mane batch 894258 measured a loss on drying of 5.4% w/w against a specification of 7.0% w/w or less.
  • One pack of 90 capsules lasts 30 days at the label serving of 3 capsules a day.

Does mushroom powder expire?

Yes, mushroom powder has an end date: every prepacked food supplement sold in the EU carries a best-before date. EU food law defines it as the date until which the food keeps its specific properties when properly stored. On a Human Pro pack you find it on the back, printed next to the LOT number.

A best-before date is not the same as a use-by date. Under Article 24 of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, a use-by date replaces the best-before date only for foods that are highly perishable from a microbiological point of view. Food supplements such as our capsules carry a best-before date.

The date only holds when the pack is stored as its label says. We do not recommend starting a pack after its best-before date, even if it looks unchanged.

How long does mushroom powder last?

Mushroom powder lasts until the best-before date on its pack, provided the pack stays closed between uses and you store it as the label says. Each producer sets that period for its own product and prints the resulting date. For Human Pro capsules, the best-before date is printed on the pack, next to the LOT number.

Our capsules carry a best-before date 24 months after production.

What about once the pack is open? Article 25 of the same regulation asks producers to print storage conditions, or a time limit for consumption after opening, where appropriate. The storage line for our capsules gives no separate period after opening, so the best-before date still applies while you keep the pack tightly closed.

Moisture is the main thing to keep out after opening. Room air reaches the contents every time the lid comes off, so close it straight after use.

How long do mushroom capsules last?

Mushroom capsules last as long as the extract inside them, which means until the best-before date on the pack. Our Lion's Mane, Reishi and Chaga capsules all carry the same printed storage line, with a range of 15 to 25 °C and the pack tightly closed. The capsule shells are made of pine cellulose.

Each of these packs holds 90 capsules with 420 mg of extract per capsule. At the label serving of 3 capsules a day, which gives 1,260 mg, one pack lasts 30 days. Packs that sit in a cupboard for months are the ones to check before you start them.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is made from the fruiting body. Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a sclerotium that grows wild on birch in Fennoscandia; we buy it raw and extract it on our farm in Flevoland. Batch values are on the Reishi test results and Chaga test results pages.

How long does Lion's Mane last?

Lion's Mane capsules from Human Pro last until the best-before date printed on the pack, next to the LOT number. Each capsule holds 420 mg of extract made from the fruiting body, never mycelium grown on grain. A pack of 90 capsules lasts 30 days at the label serving of 3 capsules a day.

Searching for Lion's Mane powder? Our Lion's Mane comes in capsules rather than as a loose powder, and the extract inside each capsule is a fine powder. In batch 894258, released 12 September 2026, 98.4% of the extract passed an 80 mesh sieve, against a specification of at least 95%.

A loose powder is opened and scooped every day. Capsules stay in a closed pack until you take one, and the same rule applies to both: lid back on straight after use.

How do we check moisture in each Lion's Mane batch?

Each Lion's Mane batch is checked for moisture and microbes before release, and the results are published per batch. In batch 894258, the farm's QC laboratory, Fungal Development Europe, measured a loss on drying of 5.4% w/w against a specification of 7.0% w/w or less. Loss on drying is the weight a sample loses in a drying oven.

Every batch extracted on our farm is tested before release by the farm's QC laboratory, Fungal Development Europe. Eurofins analysed our Lion's Mane extract in May 2024 (report AR-24-HE-153105-01).

We publish a certificate for every batch, with the method and the laboratory next to each result, and we leave earlier batches online. You can find them all on the lab results and certificates of analysis page.

Does mushroom powder go bad?

Mushroom powder can go bad when moisture gets into the pack, for example when it is left open or kept somewhere damp. Look for visible mould, a musty or sour smell, damp clumps or drops of water inside the pack. If you find any of these, do not use it.

A change in colour or firmness alone does not tell you either way, because it can also follow a warm, humid week. Check the best-before date as well: past that date, do not start the pack, even when it looks and smells as it did on day one.

If you are unsure about a Human Pro pack, email hello@human-pro.com with the LOT number and a photo. We will look at it with you and match it to the batch certificate.

Why does mushroom powder go hard in the jar?

Mushroom extract powder goes hard when it takes up moisture from the air, which makes the particles stick together into clumps or a solid plug. A powder that does this is called hygroscopic. That is why our labels ask for a dry place and a tightly closed pack.

Powder inside a capsule can shrink or set in the same way after a warm, humid spell. A hard plug on its own does not show whether a product is still in good condition.

Check the best-before date first. Then smell the contents and look inside the pack for mould. If anything seems off, do not use it, and for a Human Pro pack send us the LOT number and a photo first.

To prevent it, close the pack straight after use and keep it away from steam. Leave any moisture-absorbing sachet that came in the pack where it is.

How should you store mushroom supplements?

Store mushroom supplements in a cool, dry and dark place at room temperature, 15 to 25 °C, with the pack tightly closed. That is the storage line printed for each of our mushroom capsule packs. A kitchen cupboard away from the stove and kettle fits that line; a bathroom shelf does not.

A short checklist:

  • Close the pack straight after each use.
  • Keep it below 25 °C and away from heat sources such as the stove or a radiator.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it out of the bathroom, where warm, humid air builds up several times a day.

Should you keep mushroom capsules in the fridge? The label range is 15 to 25 °C, so a fridge is colder than the pack asks for. A cold pack opened in a warm room can also gather condensation inside, which brings in the moisture you want to keep out.

Who should not use Lion's Mane, Reishi or Chaga capsules, and when to ask a doctor

  1. Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  2. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose of 3 capsules (1,260 mg) for each product.
  3. Do you take medication? Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
  4. Stop using it and contact your doctor if you feel unwell while taking it.
  5. A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
  6. Keep out of the reach of young children.

What to do next

Check the best-before date and the LOT number on the packs you already have. Move any pack kept in a bathroom or next to the kettle to a cool, dry cupboard.

Update history

  • 20 October 2026: we rewrote this article in full. It now answers each storage and shelf-life question separately and uses the storage line from our labels and the values from our published batch certificates.
