Morning Routine You’ve Prob Never Heard Of

Morning Routine

Let’s talk about your morning routine.

If you’re like most people, it falls into one of two categories: either an elaborate biohacking ritual that takes up half your morning, or a rushed, stressful scramble to start your day.

But what if I told you there’s another way? A method backed by neuroscience that can make your mornings incredibly productive? Let’s dive in!

The Morning Routine Dilemma

Rian Doris is the co-founder and CEO of Flow Research Collective. They are an amazing institute that teaches the art of flow states.

Not too long ago, he released a video that turns all-hour morning routines on its head. It’s called the 1 minute morning routine.

In his video, he confesses that growing up in Ireland, he was that stereotypical biohacker with an excessive morning routine. Lemon water, yoga, journaling, exercise, affirmations, mushroom coffee, ice baths, sunlight exposure – you name it, he did it.

The result? He wouldn’t start actual work until just before lunch.

Then he moved to LA and met successful entrepreneurs and billionaires who were running circles around me productivity-wise. Their secret? They didn’t have elaborate morning routines. They just woke up and got to work.

The Science of Flow Proneness

This revelation led him to explore the concept of flow proneness, which was discovered by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Flow proneness is our tendency to experience flow states, that peak state of consciousness where work feels effortless and time flies by.

Here’s the kicker: your flow proneness is naturally at its highest right when you wake up.

Why? Two reasons:

  1. Your cognitive load is low, like RAM in a computer that hasn’t been filled yet.
  2. Your brainwaves are still close to theta or delta (sleep waves), which are not far from the neuroelectrical signature of flow.

The Wake-Up-and-Flow Approach

So, what does this mean for your morning routine? Instead of spending that prime flow time on an elaborate routine, you should dive straight into your highest-priority work. Within 90 seconds of opening your eyes, start working on your most important task.

It might feel strange at first, but within 15 minutes, you’ll likely find yourself deep in flow, fully waking up while working in this optimal state.

The Importance of Recovery

However, after trying this approach for a year, he noticed something: while he was incredibly productive, he started to burn out. The same was true for many of the successful entrepreneurs he observed.

This is where the research on flow cycles comes in. Flow isn’t binary; it’s a cycle with four distinct phases, including a crucial recovery phase. Without proper recovery, we can’t access flow again.

The Perfect Morning Routine: A Blend of Flow and Recovery

The key is to find a sweet spot between the biohacker’s elaborate routine and the entrepreneur’s all-work approach. Here’s what Rian recommends:

  1. Implement “wake up and flow”: Within 90 seconds of waking, start your highest-priority work.
  2. Work in flow for 1-3 hours.
  3. After your flow session, do your recovery routine – the lemon water, stretching, yoga, or whatever makes you feel great.

Think of this as an inverted morning routine: work first, recover later, but never skip recovery.

Tips for Success

To make this routine work be sure to prepare your task the night before in extreme detail and then allocate enough time for a long flow block – aim for 1-3 hours of dedicated, high-priority work.

Your Challenge

I challenge you to try this tomorrow. Tonight, prep your task. Tomorrow, as soon as you wake up, drop into the task.

You’ll likely find yourself in deep flow very quickly.

Ride that wave for 2-3 hours, then do your reboot routine to recover and boost flow proneness for the rest of the day.
