How to take lion's mane capsules: serving, timing and food

By Nils Paar 8 min read

About this article Human Pro sells the products mentioned in this article, so this is not an independent review. Our editorial policy explains how we work.

Take 3 Lion's Mane capsules (1,260 mg) a day with a glass of water, preferably with a meal, as our product page says. The page also notes that many people take them in the morning. Do not take more than 3 capsules a day, and go by the label on your own pack.

This guide covers our Lion's Mane capsules only, from the daily serving to checking your batch. The Lion's Mane oral spray has its own directions.

Key facts

  • One serving of Human Pro Lion's Mane is 3 capsules of 420 mg extract each, so 1,260 mg a day.
  • Our product page says to take the 3 capsules (1,260 mg) with a glass of water, preferably with a meal.
  • A pack of 90 capsules lasts 30 days at the label serving of 3 capsules a day.
  • The LOT number is printed on the back of the pack, next to the best-before date, and matches a published batch certificate.

How much lion's mane should you take per day?

The amount of lion's mane to take per day is the serving printed on the label. For Human Pro Lion's Mane capsules, that is 3 capsules of 420 mg a day, which gives 1,260 mg of fruiting body extract. The label also says not to exceed this daily dose.

EU law requires every food supplement label to state the recommended daily portion. It also requires a warning not to exceed it (Directive 2002/46/EC, Article 6(3)).

That portion is set for one product. A figure from another brand, or from a powder or a spray, does not carry over to our capsules.

Our label gives one daily serving and no other amount, so this guide does the same.

When you compare labels, check whether the figure is per capsule or per day. Then check whether it is extract or ground mushroom. Our capsules hold extract made from the fruiting body, never mycelium grown on grain.

How do you take lion's mane capsules, step by step?

You take lion's mane capsules by swallowing the daily serving of 3 capsules (1,260 mg) with a glass of water. For Human Pro Lion's Mane, our product page adds: preferably with a meal. The steps below follow the label and the product page for our capsules, in order.

  1. Read the label on your pack, including the do-not-exceed line.
  2. Take 3 capsules (1,260 mg) with a glass of water.
  3. Where you can, take them with a meal, as the product page prefers.
  4. Close the pack straight after use and put it back where you store it.
  5. Do not take more than 3 capsules in one day.

Water is the only drink our product page names for the capsules, and they are swallowed whole. A glass of water with a meal you already eat covers both lines at once.

Should you take lion's mane with or without food?

Our product page says to take Human Pro Lion's Mane capsules preferably with a meal. So take the 3 capsules (1,260 mg) with a glass of water, with a meal where you can. The page gives no instruction for taking them on an empty stomach, so this guide gives none either.

Which meal? The product page names none. A meal you eat every day makes the serving easier to remember.

Searching for "lion's mane on an empty stomach"? Our product page does not cover that, so we give no direction for it. For questions about your own situation, the safety section below says when to ask first.

When should you take lion's mane?

Our product page sets no fixed time of day for Human Pro Lion's Mane capsules, and it notes that many people take them in the morning. It gives the daily serving of 3 capsules (1,260 mg) with a glass of water, preferably with a meal. Pick a meal you are least likely to skip.

Morning or night? The product page does not choose, and this guide goes no further than its note about the morning. Whatever time you pick, the daily total stays at 3 capsules (1,260 mg), and the do-not-exceed line on the label still applies.

How long does one pack of Lion's Mane capsules last?

One pack of Human Pro Lion's Mane capsules lasts 30 days at the label serving. The pack holds 90 capsules, and the serving is 3 capsules a day, so 90 divided by 3 gives 30 days. Each daily serving holds 1,260 mg of extract.

Label figure Amount
Extract per capsule 420 mg
Capsules per daily serving 3
Extract per daily serving 1,260 mg
Capsules per pack 90
Days per pack at 3 capsules a day 30

Write the start date on the pack if you want to know when the next one is due. Our capsules carry a best-before date 24 months after production.

That date is printed on the back of the pack, next to the LOT number.

How should you store Lion's Mane capsules?

Store Lion's Mane capsules in a cool, dry and dark place at room temperature (15 to 25 °C), and keep the pack tightly closed. That is the storage line on our Lion's Mane label. Close the pack straight after you take your serving.

A closed kitchen cupboard can fit that line. Keep the pack away from heat and steam, such as the stove, the kettle or a bathroom.

If you keep the pack near the table where you eat, keep it out of direct sunlight. A fridge is colder than the 15 to 25 °C on the label, so the label does not ask for one.

For best-before dates and other storage questions, such as clumping, read our guide on how long mushroom capsules last and how to store them.

How can you check what is in your pack?

You can check what is in your pack of Human Pro Lion's Mane by matching its LOT number to a published batch certificate. The LOT number is printed on the back of the pack, next to the best-before date. Each certificate gives the lab and the method for every result, next to its specification.

Every batch extracted on our farm is tested before release by the farm's QC laboratory, Fungal Development Europe. Eurofins analysed our Lion's Mane extract in May 2024 (report AR-24-HE-153105-01).

What should you check before you start?

Before you start, read the label on your pack of Lion's Mane capsules line by line. It gives the daily serving of 3 capsules (1,260 mg), the do-not-exceed line and the warnings. Then read the next section, which says who should not use Lion's Mane capsules and when to ask first.

If the label on your pack differs from this page, follow the label. The label carries the information EU law requires for each pack, and we update this guide when it changes.

Keep the label readable until the pack is empty. The LOT number and best-before date on it are what you need to look up your batch later. The serving line stays there for whenever you want to check it again.
