How to choose a lion's mane mushroom supplement: 6 things to check
Fact-checked by Aletta de Wit, physician registered in the Dutch BIG register, on . The check covers facts and sources. Aletta does not recommend products.
About this article Human Pro sells the products mentioned in this article, so this is not an independent review. Our editorial policy explains how we work.
Before you buy a lion's mane mushroom supplement, check six things: part used, extract, mg per serving, batch certificate, heavy metals and origin. Each one can be read on a label or a published lab report. Human Pro sells Lion's Mane capsules, so we show what ours carry as a worked example, not as a ranking.
The checklist below sets our Lion's Mane capsules next to each check, so you can test the method on a product before you use it on others.
Key facts
- Human Pro Lion's Mane is made from the fruiting body, never from mycelium grown on grain.
- One serving is 3 capsules of 420 mg extract each, so 1,260 mg per daily serving, and a pack holds 90 capsules.
- Our Lion's Mane is grown and extracted on our farm in Flevoland, the Netherlands.
- Batch 894258 was released on 12 September 2026 with certificate COA-LM-894258-01 from the Fungal Development Europe QC laboratory.
- Eurofins measured 0.041 mg/kg lead in our Lion's Mane extract in May 2024 (report AR-24-HE-153105-01); the EU maximum for food supplements is 3.0 mg/kg.

What should you look for when buying a lion's mane supplement?
A lion's mane supplement can be compared fairly only on facts you can check yourself. Six of them sit on the label or the lab report: the part used, the extract, the mg per daily serving, the batch certificate, heavy metals and origin. The table shows where to find each one and what our capsules show.
| What to check | Where to find it | What it tells you | What our Lion's Mane capsules show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part of the mushroom | Label | Whether the powder is made from the fruiting body or from mycelium | Fruiting body, never mycelium grown on grain |
| Extract or ground mushroom | Label | Whether the mushroom was extracted, and whether the label says where and how | Whole-mushroom extract, made on our farm |
| Mg per daily serving | Label | The amount per day, which matters more than the amount per capsule | 420 mg per capsule; 3 capsules give 1,260 mg |
| Batch certificate | The seller's lab results page | Whether the LOT on your pack matches a report with a lab, a method and a date | Batch 894258, certificate COA-LM-894258-01, released 12 September 2026 |
| Heavy metals | Lab report | Measured heavy-metal values next to the EU maximums | Lead 0.041 mg/kg against a maximum of 3.0 mg/kg (Eurofins, May 2024) |
| Origin | Label or product page | Where it was grown and where it was extracted, which can be two places | Grown and extracted on our farm in Flevoland, the Netherlands |

Start with the part used, because it decides what the rest of the label describes. The fruiting body is the mushroom you can see and pick.
Mycelium is the network of fine threads it grows from. Mycelium sold as a supplement can be grown on grain such as rice or oats, and that grain can then stay in the powder.
Which lion's mane supplement should you buy?
Lion's mane supplements differ too much in what they contain for one product to suit every buyer, and as a seller we do not rank brands. Compare each product you are looking at on the six checks in the table. Choose one whose label and published lab report answer all six, with a batch number you can match to your pack.
Two jars that are both sold as lion's mane can still differ in every one of those six facts. Some label wording gives you nothing to check, so count it as missing information:
- "Polysaccharides" with no method named next to the figure.
- "Lab tested" or "third-party tested" with no lab name, report number or date.
- A serving given per capsule only, with no daily amount.
- A blend that does not state how much lion's mane it holds.
- An origin that names the packing country but not where the mushroom was grown.
We sell Lion's Mane capsules and a Lion's Mane oral spray. Read the right-hand column of the checklist as one example that you can check against our lab results page, never as a verdict on other products.
What is lion's mane mushroom?
Lion's mane is a mushroom with a white, cascading shape, sold in the EU as a food supplement in several forms. At Human Pro we grow it on our farm in Flevoland and harvest the whole fruiting bodies. Our capsules hold a whole-mushroom extract made from those fruiting bodies.
Substrate, growing, harvest and extraction happen on one site, by one team, at our farm in Flevoland. The fruiting body is the part we harvest and extract. That is why we can name one part, one farm and one place of extraction for every batch we release.
No health claim has been authorised in the EU or in Great Britain for Lion's Mane, so we don't make one. This page explains how we grow, extract and test it.
What does "third-party tested" mean for a lion's mane supplement?
"Third-party tested" on a lion's mane supplement means a laboratory outside the seller analysed it. The phrase on its own does not name the lab, the batch or the results. Ask for the report itself, check that it names the lab and a report number, and see which batch it covers.
Our Lion's Mane is tested in two layers, and each certificate says which lab produced it.
Every batch extracted on our farm is tested before release by the farm's QC laboratory, Fungal Development Europe. Eurofins analysed our Lion's Mane extract in May 2024 (report AR-24-HE-153105-01).
Fungal Development Europe is the QC laboratory of our farm, not an outside lab. Eurofins Food Testing Netherlands is an external laboratory, and its report holds the heavy-metal values below.
| Analyte | Result | EU maximum for food supplements | Method | Lab and accreditation | Report date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lead | 0.041 mg/kg | 3.0 mg/kg | ICP-MS | Eurofins Food Testing Netherlands, not stated | 31 May 2024 |
| Cadmium | 0.037 mg/kg | 1.0 mg/kg | ICP-MS | Eurofins Food Testing Netherlands, not stated | 31 May 2024 |
| Mercury | below 0.002 mg/kg | 0.10 mg/kg | ICP-MS | Eurofins Food Testing Netherlands, not stated | 31 May 2024 |
| Arsenic | 0.17 mg/kg | no EU-specific supplement limit | ICP-MS | Eurofins Food Testing Netherlands, not stated | 31 May 2024 |
Verification: Eurofins report AR-24-HE-153105-01, 31 May 2024, on a sample of our Lion's Mane extract. These values come from that report, not from batch 894258, whose certificate does not cover heavy metals. EU maximums: Regulation (EU) 2023/915, Annex I.
What should a lion's mane certificate of analysis show?
A lion's mane certificate of analysis should name the batch and the lab, and give a method and a specification for every result. It also needs a date you can match to the LOT number on your pack. A result with no method or limit next to it tells you very little about the product.
Beta-glucans are polysaccharides in the fruiting body, and on a certificate they are a quality marker. The Megazyme K-YBGL assay measures total glucans and alpha-glucans (starch and glycogen) separately and reports beta-glucans as the difference. A "polysaccharides" figure without a named method can include starch.
| Analyte | Result | Specification | Method | Lab and accreditation | Released |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terpenes, total | 5.6% w/w | at least 5% w/w | Colour reaction, spectrophotometer | Fungal Development Europe QC laboratory, not stated | 12 Sep 2026 |
| Polyphenols, total | 0.81% w/w | at least 0.7% w/w | Colour reaction, spectrophotometer | Fungal Development Europe QC laboratory, not stated | 12 Sep 2026 |
| Loss on drying | 5.4% w/w | at most 7.0% w/w | Drying oven, gravimetric | Fungal Development Europe QC laboratory, not stated | 12 Sep 2026 |
| Total plate count | 2,400 CFU/g | at most 100,000 CFU/g | Plate count, in-house | Fungal Development Europe QC laboratory, not stated | 12 Sep 2026 |
| Particle size (below 80 mesh) | 98.4% | at least 95% | Sieve stack, gravimetric | Fungal Development Europe QC laboratory, not stated | 12 Sep 2026 |
Verification: batch 894258, produced 23 August 2026, released 12 September 2026; match it to the LOT on your pack. Certificate COA-LM-894258-01, Fungal Development Europe QC laboratory. Full certificate: Lion's Mane lab results and certificates.
We publish a certificate for every batch, with the method and the laboratory next to each result, and we leave earlier batches online. The LOT number is printed on the back of the pack, next to the best-before date.
Lion's Mane capsules: fruiting body extract grown on our farm in Flevoland, 3 capsules (1,260 mg) per serving. See Lion's Mane capsules
Lion's mane capsules, powder, tincture or spray: how do they differ?
Lion's mane forms differ in how you measure one serving and in what the label has to tell you. A capsule holds a fixed amount. With the other three forms you measure every serving yourself, so the mg per serving on the label is the figure to compare.
| Form | How one serving is measured | What to check on the label | Human Pro option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capsules | A fixed amount per capsule | mg of extract per capsule and per daily serving | Lion's Mane capsules: 420 mg per capsule, 3 capsules give 1,260 mg |
| Powder | A scoop or a scale | Grams per serving, and whether it is an extract or ground mushroom | None |
| Tincture | Drops or millilitres | mg of mushroom per millilitre, and the liquid it is made in | None |
| Oral spray | A number of sprays | mg of extract per serving and servings per bottle | Lion's Mane oral spray: up to 3 sprays give 333 mg fruiting body extract and 11 mg cinnamon extract |
Source: Lion's Mane and Lion's Mane oral spray labels, checked 19 October 2026.
Whatever the form, the same six checks apply. Our oral spray is made with Lion's Mane grown on our farm, needs no water, and a 30 ml bottle holds 90 servings. Its batch results sit on the Lion's Mane oral spray lab results page.
How much lion's mane is in one serving?
The amount of lion's mane in one serving is printed on the label as the recommended daily portion. Every EU food supplement label must state that portion and a warning not to exceed it. One serving of Human Pro Lion's Mane capsules is 3 capsules, which gives 1,260 mg of fruiting body extract.
Take 3 capsules (1,260 mg) a day with a glass of water, as the label says. A pack of 90 capsules at 3 capsules a day lasts 30 days.
When two labels show the same number of milligrams, check two things. Is the figure per capsule or per day? And is it extract or ground mushroom?
For the Lion's Mane oral spray, one serving is up to 3 sprays, and the label allows up to 3 servings a day.
Who should not use Lion's Mane, and when to ask a doctor
- Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

- Stop using it and contact your doctor if you feel unwell while taking it.
- A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions
Are all lion's mane supplements the same?
No. Two products sold as lion's mane can differ in the part used, the extract and the mg per daily serving. Their lab reports can differ too. That is why this checklist compares those facts rather than brand names, and why each check points to a label or a published report you can read yourself.
How long does one pack of Lion's Mane capsules last?
One pack of Human Pro Lion's Mane capsules holds 90 capsules. At the label serving of 3 capsules a day, one pack lasts 30 days. The best-before date is printed on the pack, next to the LOT number, so you can check both dates and batch in one place.
How should you store lion's mane capsules?
Store lion's mane capsules in a cool, dry and dark place at room temperature (15 to 25 °C), and keep the pack tightly closed. That is the storage line on our Lion's Mane label. Keep the pack out of the reach of young children, as the label also says.
